| Racing with the BHSA is all about friendly competition. The rules are simple, the competition friendly, and you don't have to have the fastest boat to win! Racing is a great way to focus on and hone your sailing skills while having have some fun to boot! Our races include different makes and models of sailboats racing under the Portsmouth handicap system. Handicap systems are intended to make boats, not skippers, equal in performance. While no handicap system is perfect, they allow a boat like a MacGregor 25 to theoretically compete on an equal basis with a C&C 24 or a Santana 23. Handicaps are used to correct the finish time of the competing boats. If you don't have a boat or you would rather just crew on someone else's boat during a race, sign up for the crew pool or just show up at the captain's meeting. There's always room for extra hands!
